Major road-cleaning campaign launched across Montenegro ahead of the summer season
As part of the national environmental campaign “Čuvaj da te čuva”, a series of activities aimed at cleaning key transport routes and removing illegal waste across Montenegro was launched today at the Debeli Brijeg border crossing, in preparation for the summer tourist season.
The launch of this segment of the campaign was attended by the Ambassador of the European Union to Montenegro, Johann Sattler; the Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Region Development, Damjan Ćulafić; the Director of the Police Directorate, Lazar Šćepanović; and the Deputy Director of the State Property Administration, Mitar Batrović.
At the Debeli Brijeg border crossing, plans were presented to upgrade the site and improve transport and logistics, highlighting the importance of well-maintained and efficient crossings as visitors’ first impression of Montenegro.
Activities will continue along the main routes leading to the coast, focusing on addressing concrete, visible issues.
In the Orjen area, efforts are underway to remove a large quantity of illegally discarded waste tyres, representing one of the largest recorded sites of this kind in the country. This action marks the beginning of a more organised approach to tyre disposal and management.
In Lipci, in the municipality of Kotor, a site clean-up is being carried out alongside additional improvements, including the installation of signage, urban equipment and surveillance systems, in order to prevent the re-emergence of illegal dumping.
In Tivat and the Luštica area, clean-up actions are being organised with the participation of local services, volunteers and civil society organisations. Particular attention is being given to a location in the immediate vicinity of Tivat Airport, where a new illegal dumping site has been identified at the entrance to one of the country’s busiest transport hubs.
These activities are being carried out through cooperation between state institutions, local authorities, municipal services, the civil sector, and private partners, within the framework of the “Čuvaj da te čuva” campaign launched by the Delegation of the European Union to Montenegro.
The objective is clear — to improve the appearance and maintenance of areas along transport routes, remove illegal waste, and establish a practice of regular upkeep at locations most visible to both residents and visitors.
In the coming period, similar activities are planned across Montenegro, focusing on priority locations along major transport routes, in order to ensure higher standards of environmental management and protection ahead of the tourist season.
