"Racial Diagnosis: “Gypsy” – Nazi Genocide against Roma and Sinti and the Long Struggle for Recognition"
"This collection of objects and photographs serves as a perfect reminder of the half million European Roma who died in Nazi-occupied Europe during the Second World War. This exhibition holds significant importance in raising public awareness about the importance of acknowledging and commemorating the memory of all Holocaust victims," Ambassador Oana Kristina Popa stated at the opening of the exhibition on the Holocaust against the Roma, organised by the Roma Youth Organisation "Walk with Us - Phiren Amenca" in collaboration with the Documentation Centre of Roma and Sinti and the German Centre for Sinti and Roma, under the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany.
This unique exhibition titled: "Racial Diagnosis: “Gypsy” – Nazi Genocide against Roma and Sinti and the Long Struggle for Recognition" provides insight into the inhumane treatment of Sinti and Roma during the Second World War and the Holocaust, in which 6 million European Jews were killed, including Sinti and Roma.
The focus of the exhibition is the National Socialist genocide against Sinti and Roma: from their exclusion and disenfranchisement in the German Reich to their systematic extermination in Nazi-occupied Europe. The inhumane perspectives of the perpetrators are in stark contrast to the testimonies of the victims.
Old family photographs of Sinti and Roma are a key part of the exhibition, providing insight into the reality of their lives, allowing them to stand out as individuals. The exhibition juxtaposes historical documents of Nazi perpetrators on one side and the testimonies of victims, family photographs, and quotes from Sinti and Roma on the other.
The exhibition aims to raise awareness of the deep roots of anti-Gypsyism in European cultural history, as well as the continuity of stereotypes directed against Sinti and Roma to the present day."
