Advancing Energy Efficiency: The Closing Workshop of the BEEN Project in Nepal
The Closing Workshop of the BUILDING Energy Efficiency in Nepal (BEEN) Project was held on 11 February 2026 in Kathmandu, Nepal. This event marked the culmination of significant efforts to integrate energy-efficient practices within the country's construction sector.
The BEEN project has been instrumental in fostering a transition towards energy efficiency in buildings across Nepal. Supported by the EU SWITCH-Asia Programme and implemented by MinErgy Nepal and the University of Innsbruck (UIBK) in Austria, the BEEN project has achieved notable outcomes. A total of 40 municipalities has adopted energy-efficient building by-laws, setting a precedent for sustainable urban development. Additionally, the project has successfully trained 1,800 professionals and 948 MSMEs, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to transition to energy-efficient construction methods.
EU ambassador to Nepal Veronique Lorenzo and Mr. Gopal Prasad Sigdel, Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development jointly inaugurated the workshop.
European Union, 2026
Mr. Jose Luis Vinuesa-Santamaria, Head of Cooperation, European Union, Mr. Pralhad Karki, Under Secretary, Ministry of Federal Affairs & General Administration and Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Streicher, Head of Department, UIBK jointly launched a manual with practical guide on integrating energy efficiency into building design and construction.
