Rountable Discussion: What Next for the Film Industry?
About the programme
A baseline study conducted recently by UNESCO – in collaboration with FCA Nepal, ILO and the British Council - highlights the film industry as one of Kathmandu’s key cultural and creative industries, especially for its potential in offering a complete ecosystem for a film’s ‘ideation to release’. While private efforts over the years moved the sector forwards, the industry has long faced challenges, most particularly in terms of recognition in national policy. And when Kathmandu was selected as a UNESCO City of Film in 2023, joining the ranks of global peers like Cannes, Mumbai, Bristol and Busan, the Nepali film industry was enthralled by the possibility of horizontal access to a network of film metropolises around the world. In this light, this round table proposes to pinpoint problems and define practicable policy steps to create an innovative and sustainable film industry with the resources within reach.
