Ambassador Charles-Michel Geurts

Ambassador Charles-Michel Geurts brings more than three decades of experience in the European diplomatic service, as well as extensive expertise in international relations, cooperation, multilateral affairs, and the management and development of the European Union’s diplomatic service.

“I am honoured to represent the European Union in Nicaragua and to contribute to further strengthening the bonds of friendship and solidarity, dialogue and cooperation in areas of common interest between Europe and this country of lakes and volcanoes, natural beauty, and kind and hard-working people, which I will come to know and discover throughout my mandate,” said the Ambassador. 

Prior to his appointment to Nicaragua, Charles-Michel Geurts served as Ambassador and Head of the European Union Delegation to Ecuador, a position he held from 2020. More recently, he served as Head of the Career, Learning and Development Division and of the European Union Diplomatic Academy at the European External Action Service (EEAS).

Throughout his career, the Belgian diplomat has also held a number of senior positions, including Minister Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission at the European Union Delegation to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam; Deputy Head of Division at the European External Action Service and the European Commission, with responsibilities relating to human rights and Asia-Pacific regional affairs; and First Counsellor and Head of the Political Section at the European Commission Delegation to the United Nations in New York.

In the academic field, Charles-Michel Geurts is a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe in Bruges, where he teaches international relations and diplomacy. He holds a Master’s degree in International and Comparative Law from the European University Institute in Florence, as well as Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Law from the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve and the University of Namur in Belgium.
