Celebration of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem: EU plants mangrove trees in Punta Galeta Island

On 26 July 2024, the EU Delegation to Panama joined Wetlands International and AES Foundation in commemorating the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, with an awareness-raising and reforestation initiative on Punta Galeta Island, Panama.

Adults and young environmentalists from the initiative “Defensores del Manglar” jointly explored informative workshops on the vital role of mangroves in local ecosystems, on reforestation efforts, and on the use of drones for monitoring and data gathering. We even got the chance to pilot drones ourselves!

This green diplomacy activity allowed Ambassador Izabela Matusz and colleagues from the EUDEL to take part in the planting of black mangrove trees, thus contributing to the EU goal of 3 billion trees.

The event took place at a former U.S. military site, abandoned since 2002, where Wetlands International started a process of recovering the mangrove ecosystem last year. These efforts aim to restore the natural habitat and highlight the crucial importance of mangroves for local biodiversity and fight against climate change.

The EUDEL Panama’s involvement underscores our commitment to environmental protection. Beyond this event, in March 2024, Wetlands International launched the EU-funded project in support of broader wetland conservation, reforestation and management in the province of Chiriquí.
