European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) sets up a Representative in Panama to strengthen cooperation with LAC region

The Representative for the LAC region appointed by EASA joined the team of the EU Delegation to Panama with view of deepening the bi-regional cooperation on aviation. This commitment materialised in the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Latin American Civil Aviation Commission (LACAC) in December 2023.

In 2023, the Representative for the Latin American and Caribbean region, Alfonso Arroyo Fernández, appointed by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) joined the team of the EU Delegation to Panama with view of deepening the bi-regional cooperation on aviation. EASA was established in 2002 as a decentralised agency of the EU, headquartered in Cologne, Germany. As an independent and neutral body, EASA ensures confidence in safe air operations in Europe and world-wide by proposing and formulating rules, standards, and guidance; by certifying aircraft, parts, and equipment; and by approving and overseeing organisations in all aviation domains. In the following presentation you can find out more about the work of the EASA Representation in LAC.

Among the activities of the EASA LAC Representative was the participation in the 2023 extraordinary Assembly of the Latin American Civil Aviation Commission (LACAC) and the celebration of its 50th Anniversary in Lima, Peru, between 11 and 15 December 2023. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by EASA and LACAC, a strategic document that formalises the excellent collaboration established between both organisations that will reinforce their cooperation in the coming years. The Memorandum will promote, develop and strengthen technical cooperation between the Sides in the field of international civil aviation, in particular in the areas of aviation safety and sustainability. In addition, the EU Agency actively contributed to important activities held within LACAC’s anniversary, such as an aviation safety culture summit, a workshop on advanced urban mobility and a discussion on the role of women in aviation.

On the margins of the event, EASA organised the second management board meeting of the EU-LAC APP II project funded by the European Commission’s Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI) whose implementation with Latin American and Caribbean aviation stakeholders is ongoing and successfully creating synergies with European regulatory frameworks and aviation authorities and industry representatives.
