Securing our oceans: a regional mobilization supported by the European Union
Walo, the patrol boat of the Senegalese Navy, participated in the operations.
The operation resulted in 59 inspections and the detection of 9 violations. It was an operational success, demonstrating consistent regional cooperation, but it also highlighted structural problems that the coastal states concerned will need to address: weak port controls and widespread difficulties for coastal states in complying with their international obligations; difficulties for some states in monitoring their vessels beyond their exclusive economic zones; and the significant but unregulated artisanal fishing sector (50,000 canoes, representing 70% of landings in the CSRP area).
The European Union welcomes the results of this type of operation, which effectively combats illegal fishing and increases insecurity for vessels that do not comply with the rules.
(*) The CSRP is a regional organization comprising 7 coastal states (The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Mauritania, Senegal, and Sierra Leone).
