Soumbédioune Beach Cleanup: The European Union and its partners united for cleaner oceans

As part of the global #EUBeachCleanup campaign, the European Union Delegation to Senegal organized a beach cleanup operation on Saturday at the Soumbédioune fishing dock. This initiative is part of the EU's efforts to preserve marine and coastal ecosystems and raise awareness of the impact of pollution on the oceans.

The event brought together numerous institutional and community stakeholders, including Mr. Mamadou Goudiaby, Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Economy, Mr. Damien Desquiens, representative of the European Union Delegation to Senegal, Mr. Abdou Aziz Paye, Mayor of the municipality of Fass-Gueule Tapée-Colobane, as well as representatives of the Ministries of Youth and Environment, stakeholders from the Soumbédioune quayside led by their president, Mr. Mbengue, and members of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games Organizing Committee.

Students from a school in Gueule Tapée also participated in this civic activity, demonstrating the importance of youth involvement in environmental protection.

After more than an hour of work, 6.22 tons of waste were collected thanks to the efforts of all participants. Teams from the National Waste Management Company (SONAGED) then ensured their disposal to the landfill.

This symbolic operation, beyond its immediate environmental impact, is part of a broader effort aimed at promoting sustainable practices, strengthening the resilience of coastal areas, and preparing Dakar to host the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in a cleaner and healthier environment.

#EUBeachCleanup is a global campaign launched by the European Union that encourages citizens to take concrete action to protect the oceans and biodiversity. It invites everyone to become an agent of change for a sustainable marine environment.
