Last week, Inge Bernaerts, Director for Strategy and Policy, Directorate-General for Competition (DG COMP), European Commission, presented an insightful guest lecture on “Competition Policy as a Driver of Economic Integration – An EU Perspective” at the Singapore Management University’s (SMU), Yong Pung How School of Law. 

Hosted by Professor Pasha L. Hsieh, Lee Kong Chian Professor of Law & Jean Monnet Chair and the SMU Centre for Digital Law, the session opened with welcome remarks by Philipp Dupuis, Head of the Economic and Trade Section at the EU Delegation to Singapore. 

The event brought together faculty, practitioners and students for a lively discussion on the role of competition policy in the European Union. During her lecture, Director Bernaerts examined how competition policy enhances market efficiency, fosters innovation and ensures fair business practices, highlighting its role in strengthening the EU’s internal market. 

The lecture concluded with an engaging exchange of views during the Q&A session moderated by Assistant Professor Nydia Remolina, Deputy Director, SMU Centre for Commercial Law in Asia. The closing remarks were delivered by Associate Professor Han-Wei Liu, Deputy Director, Centre for Digital Law.
