Geographical Indications are a key success to the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (EUSFTA)

The EUSFTA, in force since November 2019, includes an enhanced framework of protection of Intellectual Property Rights, including Geographical Indications (GIs). There are currently 165 EU GIs registered and protected in Singapore, covering a wide range of agri-food products.

Product names protected as GIs have a specific link to a given territory, where a quality, reputation or other characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographical origin.

The GI quality scheme enables consumers to trust and distinguish quality products while also helping producers to protect and market their authentic products.

As one of the key benefits of the EUSFTA, qualifying EU GIs can seek protection in Singapore by filing for registration with the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS).

With annual EU exports of GIs valued at over €1 billion, a total of 165 EU GIs are currently protected in Singapore, mainly wines, spirits, cheese and meat products.

This booklet, published by the IP Key Southeast Asia project, in collaboration with the European Union Delegation to Singapore, provides further details on the protection of EU GIs in the framework of the EUSFTA.
