European Union support refugee projects in River Nile, Red Sea and Khartoum States

The European Union in Sudan, the Danish Red Cross in Africa  and Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) met with women and men representatives of migrant and local communities in Northern State.

Last week, the European Union@EUSudan, the Danish Red Cross in Africa  and Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) met with women and men representatives of migrant and local communities in Northern State to hear about how health and education is improving in their communities, thanks to PROTECT, a co-funded project of the European Union and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.

The team met the SRCS volunteers who are trained on first aid and home nursing, including common diseases such as malaria. They provide food, clothes and psychosocial assistance to migrants stranded in the north of Sudan.

The team visited three out of the four Humanitarian Service Points (HSP) in Dongola, which are protection centres for vulnerable people where they receive help and where they can also enjoy intercultural events. PROTECT also funds home visit assistance within the communities for people who cannot reach the centres.

During one of the visits to the HSPs in the area, a woman from the Ethiopian community explained the benefits of the health insurance schemes supported by PROTECT, under which she was fully covered throughout her pregnancy and delivery period.

These activities and more are replicated in Red Sea, River Nile and Khartoum States, with the aim of protecting the dignity of migrants and asylum seekers moving towards the northern borders of Sudan.
