EU Ambassador on the Nighttime Shelling: “Russia Is Trying to Break Kyiv”

"BREAKING NEWS. Sirens just stopped wailing over Kyiv.

Rescue teams are still pulling people from the rubble. Others are still trapped beneath collapsed buildings.

The attacks come so often now that people no longer have time to breathe between them. They barely recover from one night before the next one begins.

Last night alone, russia fired 28 ballistic and hypersonic missiles and more than 100 drones at Ukraine. Kyiv and the surrounding region were the main targets. More than 30 missiles were launched within about 20 minutes, followed by waves of jet powered Shahed drones, then another barrage of missiles.

None of the ballistic missiles were intercepted. Ukraine badly needs Patriot interceptors, the only protection against ballistic missiles.

The consequences are devastating. At least 15 people have been killed and more than 50 injured in Kyiv and the Kyiv region. The numbers are still rising.

In Brovary, eight people waiting for a train were killed by a russian ballistic missile. A Nova Poshta sorting centre was destroyed. Homes burned. Families lost everything in a single night.

Yesterday I spoke with a young colleague from my team.

She is getting married in September.

She should be thinking about her wedding dress, flowers, music and the people she loves. Instead, she has to plan her wedding in between missile attacks. Every evening she checks where she will hide if the sirens start again. She hopes her home will still be standing by morning.

No young woman should have to prepare for the happiest day of her life like this.

War can never become normal!
