With the EU support, Lutsk dormitory for IDPs reopens after large-scale reconstruction

On November 30, 2023, representatives of the EU Delegation to Ukraine have visited the city for the opening ceremony of the LNTU dormitory designated to house internally displaced students and teachers of the institution. The reconstruction of the building was funded by the EU grant as a part of the project “Reconstruction of an educational building of the Lutsk National Technical University into a dormitory for IDPs”.

The EU Delegation to Ukraine comprised of Chloé Allio, Head of Operations Section “Economic Cooperation, Energy, Infrastructure and Environment”, along with Andriy Bandura, Coordinator of the Gas, Oil, and Energy Efficiency Sector and Stanislav Toshkov, Coordinator of the Economic Cooperation Sector. They met with the Lutsk City Mayor, Ihor Polishchuk.

“This project is a great example of effective support of the European Union for Ukrainian people. We are sincerely thankful for your attention to the challenges that internally displaced Ukrainians go through. Your support has been invaluable in addressing a crucial issue of improving the living conditions for this specific group. We are particularly pleased that this living space will be benefitial for both students entering independent life and educators compelled to leave their university due to conflicts. This provision will serve as an additional incentive for them to work in our city," emphasized Mr Polishchuk. He admitted the high quality of the repairs performed as well as comfort of housing facilities.

The EU Delegation attended the renovated dormitory opening ceremony. They were satisfied that the reconstruction of the two-story building met European standards. The installation of essential utilities was completed, the roof was changed, windows were replaced, the facade was insulated and interior refurbishments were carried out. The redesigned buildings with the total area of 3.5 thousand square meters include 54 rooms for students, 8 smart apartments designed mainly for families, 7 apartments with improved layouts. On the ground floor, rooms for people with disabilities are equipped with inclusive facilities, including bathrooms, elevators and ramps. All rooms have been renovated: there are household appliances, kitchens, bathrooms and electrical appliances available for the residents.

Chloé Allio, Head of Operations Section “Economic Cooperation, Energy, Infrastructure and Environment” at the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine commented: “We have visited several communities that receive financial assistance to build housing for internally displaced people and we are extremely impressed with the achievements of Lutsk community. We were there last year during the initial stages of the reconstruction, and it is remarkable to witness how quickly this building has been transformed into the dormitory ready for people to move in”.
