They Rescue. They Care. They Protect: EU and UNDP launch exhibition honouring Ukraine’s emergency responders

This exhibition is a visual salute to those who save lives and restore hope amid war.

The European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine have opened a photo exhibition titled “They Rescue. They Care. They Protect” at Blockbuster Mall in Kyiv.

Running from 2 to 21 December, the exhibition spotlights the courage and resilience of Ukraine’s emergency service workers, medics, psychologists, police officers, and energy specialists who work relentlessly to protect people, restore vital services, and support communities during wartime.

Through powerful portraits and personal stories, the exhibition reveals the human faces behind rescue operations, medical care, psychological support, and infrastructure repairs. Each image tells a story of determination and empathy — of individuals who act decisively when danger strikes.

Organized under the flagship “EU4Recovery — Empowering Communities in Ukraine” partnership between the EU and UNDP, the exhibition seeks to raise awareness of the essential role emergency responders play in saving lives and rebuilding communities.

Stefan Schleuning, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Ukraine, stressed the EU’s commitment to supporting those who keep people safe: “Every day, emergency responders demonstrate extraordinary bravery and compassion. Through this exhibition, we honour their service and reaffirm the EU’s dedication to strengthening Ukraine’s ability to withstand and rebuild. Their work is not only about saving lives, but also about preserving hope and dignity.”

Auke Lootsma, UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine, highlighted the importance of emergency responders in Ukraine’s recovery: “Behind every rescue, every restored power line, and every moment of psychological relief is someone choosing courage over fear. This exhibition shines a light on these heroes and reminds us that resilience grows through solidarity. Together with the EU, UNDP will keep standing by Ukraine’s communities, empowering them for recovery and a sustainable future.”
