Two years have passed since Russia started its full scale invasion of Ukraine, causing immense human suffering and destruction. The EU condemns in the strongest possible terms Russia's unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine. This is a blatant violation of international law, including the UN Charter. The EU continues to stand in solidarity with Ukraine.

Two years ago, on 24 February 2022, Russian forces began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Russia’s war of aggression has been spreading death and destruction in Ukraine and 14.6 million Ukrainians are in current need of humanitarian aid. This represents nearly 40% of the population, more than the entire population of Greece, Sweden, or Czechia. The resilience of the people of Ukraine is extraordinary, but they don’t stand alone.

We call on Russia to immediately and unconditionally withdraw all its military personnel and equipment from the entire territory of Ukraine in full respect of Ukraine's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders and cease all hostilities. We support Ukraine’s Peace Formula as the only legitimate and credible path towards a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in line with the UN Charter.

From the first day of Russia’s unjustified and illegal war against Ukraine, the European Union and its allies have made the collective decision to support Ukraine, for as long as necessary and on all fronts: humanitarianeconomic, financial, political, diplomatic and military. Ukraine’s fight for its freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity is about safeguarding fundamental human values and principles of international law. The EU and its Member States are committed to contributing, for the long term and together with partners, to security commitments to Ukraine. These commitments will help Ukraine to defend itself, resist destabilisation efforts and deter acts of aggression in the future. Ukraine’s security is Europe’s security.
