EU Delegation Hosts Screening of Mr. Nobody Against Putin
04 June 2026 – The Delegation of the European Union hosted a special screening of the documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin at the Residence of the Ambassador. The event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of civil society, journalists, and other partners for an evening of reflection on the impact of war, propaganda, and civic courage.
Directed by David Borenstein and co-directed by Pavel Talankin, Mr. Nobody Against Putin tells the remarkable story of Pavel “Pasha” Talankin, a Russian primary school teacher whose life changes dramatically following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Known by his students as a caring mentor and trusted confidant, Talankin finds himself increasingly drawn into a system shaped by state propaganda and militarisation.
As the school’s videographer, Talankin documents the transformation of his school and community, capturing rare and revealing footage that sheds light on the growing influence of propaganda, the militarisation of youth, and the broader impact of the war on everyday life in Russia. Faced with profound ethical dilemmas and growing risks to his own safety, he ultimately becomes an international whistleblower.
Opening the event, Toivo Klaar, Ambassador of the European Union to Uzbekistan, noted: “The film also offers a spark of hope. It demonstrates that in the face of lies and injustice, we all have the choice to stand up for what is right, and even seemingly small acts have the power to challenge systems based on fear and falsehood.”
Through intimate storytelling and unprecedented access, the documentary offers a powerful perspective on the human consequences of authoritarianism and the pressures faced by individuals who choose truth over silence. The film highlights the importance of independent voices, freedom of expression, and the role of courageous individuals in documenting realities that might otherwise remain hidden.
Following the screening, participants engaged in an open discussion on the themes raised by the film, including the protection of fundamental freedoms, media literacy, and the importance of supporting independent journalism and civil society.
The screening formed part of the European Union’s ongoing efforts to promote peace, dialogue, critical thinking, and public engagement on issues related to human rights, democratic values, and the freedom of expression.
The European Union remains committed to supporting independent media, civil society organisations, and initiatives that foster informed public debate and strengthen societal resilience against disinformation and manipulation.
