EU Special Representative for Central Asia, Ambassador Terhi Hakala met with the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev

EU Special Representative for Central Asia, Ambassador Terhi Hakala praised the strong and growing partnership between the EU and Uzbekistan, as well as close EU cooperation with Central Asia.

19 October 2022, Tashkent, Uzbekistan. During her visit to Tashkent on 19 October 2022, the EU Special Representative for Central Asia (EUSR CA), Ambassador Terhi Hakala met with the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

In their exchange, EUSR CA praised the strong and growing partnership between the EU and Uzbekistan, as well as close EU cooperation with Central Asia. The President and the EUSR CA discussed the Uzbek reform process including constitutional changes. EUSR CA confirmed continued EU support for the ambitious reform agenda. Discussing Uzbek international initiatives, the EUSR CA commended the President’s active promotion for regional dialogue reiterating the EU’s support to regional cooperation in Central Asia.

The President and the EUSR CA also looked forward to the upcoming high-level EU-Central Asia meetings including the meeting of the five Central Asian leaders with the President of the European Council Charles Michel in Astana next week, as well as the EU-Central Asia Ministerial and the EU-Central Asia Sustainable Connectivity Conference. The EUSR thanked the President for hosting the latter in Samarkand on 17 and 18 November respectively.
