European Union and Republic of Uzbekistan partnership in the programme “Improving Governance in Uzbekistan”
19 May 2023, Almaty, Kazakhstan. Today, during the 2nd EU-Central Asia Economic Forum, the Deputy Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate General for International Partnerships (DG-INTPA), Ms Myriam Ferran and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Mr Gayrat Fazilov, signed a Financing Agreement for the Improving Governance in Uzbekistan Programme.
The Programme grants EUR 8 million to the ambitious reform process that Uzbekistan has embarked upon, for strengthening its governance framework, to serve the needs and aspirations of its people. As in the words of the Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis:
“Improving governance is a complex and long-term endeavour, but we see the tangible commitment that Uzbekistan shows in overcoming these challenges. By prioritising transparency, combating corruption, promoting inclusive governance and building administrative capacity, Uzbekistan will pave the way for a more prosperous, just, and democratic society with a governance framework that truly serves the needs and aspirations of its people.”
The 2nd Economic forum gathered national and international experts, civil society representatives, State bodies, international organisations and business representatives that discussed challenges lying ahead for Central Asia. Stakeholders were discussing mechanisms that result in a tangible and sustainable impact on all citizens.
