Women Diplomats and Students Gather in Tashkent to Mark International Day of Women in Diplomacy
3 June 2026, Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Representatives of seven diplomatic missions joined the event, which focused on women’s leadership in diplomacy, the importance of inclusive decision-making, and the barriers women continue to face in reaching senior diplomatic positions worldwide.
Opening the event, Renata Wróbel, Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Uzbekistan, stressed that gender equality is not only a fundamental right, but also a prerequisite for stronger institutions and more effective diplomacy. She underlined the importance of mentorship, exposure, and professional networks in helping young women pursue careers in international relations, noting that direct engagement with practitioners can play a decisive role in shaping future career paths.
Dr. Gulnoza Ismailova, Executive Director of El-Yurt Umidi Foundation, Adviser to the Rector of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy, underscored that the New Uzbekistan is creating broader opportunities for women to realize their potential and contribute to society. She emphasized that leadership should be determined by ability, vision, and dedication rather than gender. She called for continued efforts to ensure that talented women are empowered to lead, innovate, and actively shape the future of Uzbekistan and the international community.
The panel discussion brought together senior diplomats and academics to share candid reflections on their professional journeys, discuss persistent gender barriers in diplomacy, and explore the skills increasingly required in today’s fast-changing global environment.
One of the most dynamic parts of the programme was the interactive Speed Networking session, where students spoke directly with diplomats in a series of informal conversations. Participants exchanged views on diplomatic careers, international cooperation, and opportunities for young women in the field.
Students expressed strong interest in more initiatives that connect them with practitioners, highlighting the value of open discussions about the realities of diplomatic work, career development, and the challenges and opportunities facing future diplomats.
