On this occasion, the EU will reaffirm its deep commitment to multilateralism and to the central role of the United Nations in promoting a peaceful and prosperous world.  A UN-centred multilateral system fit for the 21st century is more important than ever.

The EU works closely with the UN on the many regional dossiers, from Syria to Iran, from Afghanistan to the Sahel, to name but a few. And on the war in Ukraine. The effects of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine touch on every aspect of sustainable development, making it all too evident why multilateralism must be part of the solution.

Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine has significantly aggravated the global food crisis, putting millions of people at risk, particularly the poorest and the most vulnerable. The EU is standing by its partners to support a swift and comprehensive global response:

  • 1 billion € pledged for the Sahel and Lake Chad regions and over 600 million € for the Horn of Africa
  • 225 million € for food facility to swiftly assist our partners in North Africa – the region most dependent of agricultural supplies from Ukraine and Russia
  • Almost 1.5 billion € for developing sustainable food systems in the Eastern and Southern neighbourhood, the Western Balkans and Turkey for the 2021-2014 period.

The EU is actively engaging with international partners and with the UN’s Global Crisis Response Group to alleviate the consequences of the war and to address the compound effects of the food, energy and finance crises.

The EU continues working hand-in-hand with the UN, to strengthen international security and peace, prioritising prevention and peacebuilding.
