Bolivia: High Representative/Vice President Josep Borrell met with Foreign Minister Rogelio Mayta

High Representative/Vice President (HR/VP) Josep Borrell and Bolivia’s Foreign Minister Rogelio Mayta met in Brussels on Wednesday. They discussed the bilateral relations between the European Union and Bolivia, including bilateral cooperation under a new 2021-2027 strategy.

High Representative Borrell stressed that Bolivia is a very important partner for the EU, receiving significant investment through EU development cooperation. He reiterated the EU’s firm commitment to develop a strong partnership based on common values and solidarity.

He also called for further building the relationship based on mutual respect, recalling the EU contributions to promoting dialogue that were always conducted in line with EU principles and with a constructive spirit. In this context, the HR/VP confirmed the EU’s readiness to support national reconciliation efforts in Bolivia.

High Representative Borrell and Minister Mayta further exchanged views on developments in their respective regions, in particular in the context of the enormous challenges created by the coronavirus pandemic. Their discussion included looking ahead to the 2021-2027 period, where the EU’s cooperation with Bolivia can be strengthened in areas such as a the green and inclusive economy, the fight against drugs, as well as promoting governance and human rights.
