Building peace in Somalia/Somaliland

23.04.2021

The El Afweyn district in Sanaag region has been subject to violent inter-clan armed conflict since 2015

Its recurrence has disrupted the socio-economic activities and contributed to the breakdown of the social structure. The conflict has caused the death of 65 persons and injured more than 100 people. It has also had serious consequences for the livelihood of communities, hindering the development of the district and increasing polarisation and isolation, which in turn limits the opportunities for the younger generations.

Following a request of the Somaliland government for expertise, the EU supported an in-depth conflict analysis. Experts collected qualitative data from interviews, group discussions (focus groups) and consultation meetings with stakeholders that are part of or are affected by the conflict. The analysis examined the core causes and effects of the conflict, identified the main actors of the conflict and those who can play a positive role in its resolution, and suggested responses. The experts also conducted training in peacebuilding for local peace committee members, including women and youth groups. The support also assisted the peace committees to plan the dissemination of peace messages to the wider community.

The EU’s support aimed at strengthening reconciliation and conflict prevention, improving the livelihoods of local communities and facilitating a more secure environment to live in.
