Burundi: statement by the High Representative / Vice President Josep Borrell on the announcement of the election results

09.06.2020

The European Union (EU) takes note of the announcement of the final results of the presidential and legislative elections, for which the Burundian people turned out in large numbers.

The EU calls for the situation to remain calm, adding its voice to those of the African Union, the United Nations and the representatives of civil society. In this regard it welcomes the statements by the political leaders and urges them to put the unity of the Burundian people first and to act accordingly, particularly by promoting inclusivity and respecting the fundamental rights of civil society, the media and the opposition. There must be an end to the intimidation of sympathisers of the political parties.

The failings reported by local election observers, particularly regarding transparency and fairness, must also be addressed.

The election of Evariste Ndayishimiye and the peaceful transfer of power could turn a new page in Burundi’s history. The EU is ready to contribute to this process, alongside its regional and international partners and on the basis of reciprocal commitments.
