Celebrating all colours of life - International Albinism Awareness Day

As we mark the International Albinism Awareness Day, we celebrate the power of diversity and reaffirm our solidarity with persons who may suffer marginalization for living with albinism. To create a world where they can thrive, free from the shackles of stigma and discrimination, we will continue dispelling deep-rooted misconceptions and reshape the narrative surrounding albinism.

Albinism is a genetic condition that transcends geographical borders and knows no ethnic or gender boundaries. Beyond the medical implications, the real struggle lies in overcoming the prevailing misunderstandings surrounding this condition. Defining people by their condition and the inability to grasp the true nature of albinism has perpetuated harmful stereotypes, reinforcing a narrative of exclusion and marginalization.

Amidst these challenges, there are remarkable young individuals who challenge the status quo and use their talents to push for a shift in the collective mind-set. Their inspiring stories are a powerful example that albinism does not define a person.

Today, we shine the spotlight on the inspiring young artist Shaznay Megan Wood from Zimbabwe. The 22-year-old is a multi-faceted artist: a poet, an actress, a model and a video vixen. Awarded the Best Female Achiever at the Africa Young Talent Achievers Awards, Shaznay breaks down stereotypes through her fearless and poignant spoken word poetry.

African yet White is a poem that reveals the plight of people living with albinism in Africa.

“The goal is to break generational curses and live the life I truly deserve,” she says when speaking about her art.

Shaznay speaks her truth through poetry and uses her talents to push for social justice.

“I believe that my work is broad, clear and authentic. I try as much as possible to tell my stories in a way that everyone can relate to. Unlike other forms of art, poetry is more of words than anything else. I believe that is the superpower within the art,” Shaznay says

Considered an “icon of the spoken word” in the arts sector, she advocates for fellow poets to express their beliefs through their work.

“Artists should continue pushing for different people in society to create unity and lessen segregation despite who you are and how you look.”

The multi-award winner and gender champion Shaznay Wood has accomplished immense success in the very competitive male-dominated arts industry. She fearlessly defies gender barriers in and unapologetically declares her imminent journey towards international recognition. With her extraordinary talent, she has already caught the attention of renowned artists, collaborating with them to create awe-inspiring masterpieces.
