Chairman of EU Military Committee attends Raisina Dialogue 2020

New Delhi, 17 Jan 2020 - The Chairman of the EU Military Committee, General Graziano, attended - together with HR/VP, Mr. Borrell – this year edition of Raisina Dialogue, titled "21@20: Navigating the Alfa Century", yesterday.

During the panel "Between Atlantic and Pacific: the future of Europe", Gen Graziano had the opportunity to highlight the steps forward made by the European Union in Security and Defence: "There is a global requirement for Europe to act as a global power and as a global partner. – Chairman stated during his intervention - The Global Strategy calls for a strategic autonomy for the EU, to be capable to act in cooperation with Partners, but also alone, if necessary”.

"Europe's integrated approach – the Chairman added - will allow the provision of economic and political support and enhance capacity building in the security sector for different countries". In Delhi, HR/VP and the Chairman met with the Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, and the Minister of Defence, R. Singh. In order to enhance the talks at military level, General Graziano also met the Chief of Defence Staff, General B. Rawat, the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral K. Singh and Japan Chief of Joint Staff, General K. Yamazaki. Inter alia, the high ranking officers discussed subjects of common interest, as well as opportunities for potential, future military interactions between the EU and partners.

"From a military perspective – General Graziano stressed - I would welcome closer relations with India in the field of security and defence. Working with third countries is a key element of EU CSDP. Common security issues must be tackled jointly, by EU, India and other partners supported by concrete actions and properly communicated to internal and external audiences."

"There are many areas where we can work together and one of these is fighting piracy at sea. Meeting Indian's Military representatives, we agreed on the opportunity to increase our cooperation to guarantee the Maritime Security also by deepening the already existing relation between Indian Navy and EU Operation Atalanta " General Graziano concluded.

The Raisina Dialogue. organized by the Observer Research Foundation, is a multilateral conference held annually to discuss a wide spectrum of issues of concerns. Since its launch in 2016, it has emerged as India's flagship conference on geopolitics and geo-economics.
