Costa Rica: Statement by the Spokesperson on the Presidential elections

Yesterday, the people of Costa Rica went to the polls to choose their next President. The European Union notes the orderly and peaceful conduct of these elections, in keeping with the country’s long-standing democratic tradition.

The EU congratulates Rodrigo Chaves on his victory and looks forward to working with the new administration. 

Costa Rica is a key partner for the EU in Central America. We have strong political ties and cooperate closely in many areas of common interest such as trade, sustainable development and democratic governance. The country is also an important and respected ally on the world stage in key areas such as the promotion of multilateralism, the fight against climate change and protecting biodiversity.

The EU looks forward to continuing its close cooperation with Costa Rica, based on our long-standing partnership and our shared democratic values and interests.
