The Eastern Partnership workshop on the Rule of Law took place on 12-13 May in Warsaw and provided the opportunity for partner countries to exchange information and share best practices on key topics related to the rule of law, with a focus on the quality and efficiency of justice reforms.

The technical workshop gathered representatives from Eastern Partnership countries (Armenia, Georgia, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine) specialising in the judiciary and the rule of law, EU Member States, EU institutions, Council of Europe, TAIEX rule of law experts and the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum.

Beyond the region, the event also brought together practitioners from the Western Balkans who shared their experience of the enlargement process. The implementation of the EU charter of fundamental rights and the role of the European Court of Human rights was also discussed.

Promotion of the rule of law is the foundation of EU enlargement and also a key priority in the EU’s Eastern Partnership policy. The workshop demonstrated the joint commitment by the EU and Eastern Partnership partners to continue promoting dialogue and cooperation at regional level in this field.

The workshop was organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Poland, in the framework of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, with the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the European Commission’s Directorate General Enlargement and the Eastern Neighbourhood (DG ENEST).
