The EEAS Environmental Statement 2025

The EEAS Environmental Statement presents the organisation’s environmental performance, progress and objectives within the framework of the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) in 2025. It provides a transparent and verified overview of how the EEAS is managing and reducing the environmental impact of its activities, both at Headquarters and across its global network.

Through this annual publication, the EEAS reports on key indicators such as energy use, resource efficiency, mobility and greenhouse gas emissions, while outlining the measures implemented to improve performance over time.

To learn more about our sustainability journey and how we are turning ambition into action, read the full report and discover how the EEAS is leading by example in support of the European Green Deal. The statement is available in English and French, reflecting our commitment to transparency, continuous improvement, and responsible environmental stewardship.

By linking the political and the operational, we strengthen our credibility, our resilience, and our contribution to a sustainable future for Europe and the world.

Managing and Reducing Environmental Impact

The figures below report how the EEAS is managing and reducing the environmental impact of its operations at Headquarters in Brussels. They are drawn from the EEAS Environmental Statement 2025, the annual report published under the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), and cover the scope of EMAS implementation at our Brussels Headquarters.

The Statement illustrates the organisation's dual role in advancing sustainability – both as a global advocate for the European Green Deal and as a model of internal environmental responsibility. It highlights tangible progress against the 2019 baseline: reductions in energy, water and paper use, lower carbon emissions, and steady gains in sustainable mobility, green procurement and recycling. Together, these results confirm that the EEAS is on track to meet its 2030 sustainability targets, building a greener and more resilient administration.

What is EMAS?

EMAS – the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme – is the European Union's voluntary instrument for organisations that want to systematically evaluate, report and improve their environmental performance. Established by Regulation (EC) No 1221/2009, it builds on the international standard ISO 14001 and adds further requirements: continuous improvement, full legal compliance, employee involvement, and the public annual publication of a verified environmental statement.

A growing number of EU institutions, agencies and bodies are registered under EMAS. The EEAS Brussels Headquarters is among them.

Our commitment to green diplomacy and operational excellence in Delegations across the world

While EMAS certification currently applies to the Brussels Headquarters, the EEAS is extending the same logic of measurement, transparency and continuous improvement to its global network. A "light" environmental management system is being rolled out progressively across the 145-strong global network of EU Delegations – adapted to the very different contexts in which our staff operate, from major capitals to remote postings with limited infrastructure. The project focuses on what most shapes our footprint abroad: energy use, mobility, water, waste, procurement and staff engagement. Lessons learned will guide improvements, so that environmental stewardship becomes part of how EU diplomacy is practised – not only what it promotes.
