Equatorial Guinea: Statement by the Spokesperson on the sentence of the leader and other members of Ciudadanos por la Innovación

10.07.2023 EEAS Press Team

The EU is deeply concerned by the harsh sentencing of the leader and other members of Ciudadanos por la Innovación by a military tribunal in Equatorial Guinea.

Everyone has the right to a trial by a competent, independent, and impartial tribunal. The use of a military tribunal to convict civilians raises serious concerns over due process and fair trial rights. The EU recalls the need to uphold the rights of the defendants to a fair trial, with all juridical guarantees, in full compliance with international human rights law.

A peaceful, free and open space for political debate and dialogue with the opposition parties and civil society organizations must be ensured.
