The European Union and Cabo Verde are taking their special partnership to the next level, with the launch of a EUR 60 million assistance measure under the European Peace Facility (EPF) to strengthen Cabo Verde’s maritime defence and security capabilities.

Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Manuel Amante da Rosa, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communities and Minister of National Defence of the Republic of Cabo Verde, met today in Brussels to mark the launch of this new phase of cooperation in the maritime security domain.

Designed to meet Cabo Verde’s specific needs, the support package will provide infrastructure, services and equipment to support the Cabo Verdean Coast Guard in key areas:

  • Maritime operations
  • Maintenance and logistics
  • Communication
  • Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance
  • Education and training

By enhancing the operational capabilities of its national Coast Guard, the EU is supporting Cabo Verde in safeguarding its maritime sovereignty, protecting marine resources and coastal communities, and addressing maritime security challenges.

This new assistance measure brings total EU support to Cabo Verde under the European Peace Facility to €75 million, demonstrating the strategic importance of our bilateral cooperation for regional security and stability.

Background

The European Peace Facility was established in March 2021 for the financing of actions under the common foreign and security policy to prevent conflicts, preserve peace and strengthen international security and stability. In particular, the European Peace Facility allows the EU to finance actions designed to strengthen the capacities of third States and regional and international organisations relating to military and defence matters.
