The EU and the Pacific Alliance: a partnership worth advancing

Close to 50% of the EU´s trade in goods with Latin America and 40% of the EU investment stock are concentrated in four countries: Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. Together, they make up the Pacific Alliance. Beyond open trade and investment, the EU shares with the Pacific Alliance the commitment to sustainable development and a joint engagement towards multilateralism.

In September 2019, the EU and the Pacific Alliance signed a Joint Declaration, to intensify cooperation and political engagement. A series of exchanges followed. Experts from both sides discuss among others how the tourism sector can advance towards a more sustainable future, how the two regions can accelerate digital transformation, as well as the issue of plastics´ pollution.

Above all, Europe and the Pacific Alliance countries share a common history, culture and values that make us natural allies. Strengthening our cultural ties is core to making our partnership stronger.

Highlighting the vast people-to-people links between the EU and of the Pacific Alliance countries, the Embassies of Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Peru, together with the EEAS, have organised a cultural event, Sabores del Pacífico' in the EEAS Brussels HQ on the 16th of June 2022.

This event was an occasion to showcase another important layer of the EU-LAC relations: the deep cultural links and the richness of the gastronomy and folklore of the four countries. The Sabores del Pacifico event was part of the EULAT4Culture series of cultural events, which put a spotlight on how cultural relations between EU and Latina America and Caribbean countries can contribute to address global challenges.
