EU support to global food security

The EU is constantly increasing its support to the most in need countries to address Global Food Insecurity. Since withdrawing from the Black Sea Grain Initiative, Russia has bombed port infrastructure in Odesa and other ports at the Black Sea and Danube, causing civilian casualties, destroying grain ready to be shipped, and damaging infrastructure for future exports.

Second slide on the carrousel affirming that Russian deliberate attacks on Ukrainian ports (on the Black Sea and Danube) disrupt food deliveries to the global markets and that Russia’s decision to block Black Sea Grain Initiative puts food supplies under stress: wheat and corn market price rose by 9% in a single day.

3rd slide of the carrousel affirming that Black Sea Grain Initiative (BSGI) helped to export 33 million tonnes of grain and foodstuffs from Ukraine through 1000 vessels helping 45 countries. Over 50% of the grain, and 2/3 of the wheat, went to developing countries. BSGI benefited all food importing countries lowering global prices by 23%.

Slide 4 affirming that EU-Ukraine Solidarity Lanes provide alternative routes for Ukrainian agricultural exports, further contributing to price decreases on world markets. The Solidarity Lanes enabled Ukraine to export 41 million tonnes of grain to global markets.

Slide 5th confirming that there are no European Union sanctions on the export of food and fertiliser trade. Russia is cynically benefitting from blocking Ukrainian exports and pushing food and fertiliser prices up seing an increase of 89% of its exports on fertilizers in 2022 according to FAO and with a forecast of 18% of increase in grain export for 2022-2024

Slide 6 of the carrousel confirming that The EU and Member States increased financial support to those in need via Team Europe Response to Global Food Insecurity: 18 billion are planned in grants for the period 2021-2024. and 7 billion n grants already disbursed to the most affected countries. This includes over EUR 1 billion of EU funds for humanitarian food and nutrition assistance.
