EUMAM MMOZAMBIQUE – One Year of Partnership, Progress, and Shared Commitment.

August and September 2025 marked a time of celebration and reflection for the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM MOZ). With the mission now completing its first year of operations, both the European Union and the Mozambican Defence Armed Forces (FADM) can look back on an impressive journey of cooperation, resilience, and capacity building.

Strengthening Health Partnerships

EUMAM MOZ continued to deepen its engagement with Mozambique’s healthcare institutions. Captain David Veríssimo, the mission’s Joint Medical Officer, paid visits to Maputo Central Hospital and the Heart Institute (ICOR). These visits reinforced the mission’s commitment to strengthening institutional and scientific cooperation, while also ensuring that Mozambican military personnel have access to high-quality medical support.

The spotlight on health also extended to education. At Maputo Central Hospital, Captain Veríssimo delivered a lecture on healthcare challenges, focusing on the rise of diet-related diseases in Mozambique. His insights underscored the importance of preventive care and the need for close collaboration between medical experts and defence personnel.

Training for a Stronger Future

At the Katembe Training Camp, the Train-the-Trainers program continued to empower FADM personnel. This initiative equips Mozambican instructors with the knowledge and skills needed to sustain training cycles independently, ensuring the impact of EUMAM MOZ endures well into the future.

In just one year, EUMAM MOZ has supported the training of more than 500 troops across 16 different capacity-building programmes. This milestone reflects a commitment not only to immediate operational readiness but also to building a self-sufficient Mozambican defence force.

Building Bridges Through Visits

The mission also welcomed key international partners. Delegations from the United States and Sweden visited the EUMAM MOZ headquarters, further strengthening ties between Mozambique and its allies. These exchanges highlight the mission’s growing role as a bridge between the Mozambican Armed Forces and the global security community.

Celebrating the First Anniversary

September 1, 2025, marked the first anniversary of EUMAM MOZ. Brigadier General Luís Barroso, the Mission Force Commander, shared an overview of the achievements: “One year after the start of EUMAM MOZ, we can proudly say that we have built solid foundations of cooperation, professionalism, and trust with our Mozambican partners.”

Messages of congratulations poured in, including from the President of the Republic of Mozambique, who expressed “great honour and deep gratitude” to the EU and all mission members, and from the Chief of Defence of the FADM, who emphasized the “spirit of dedication, solidarity, and commitment to peace” that has defined the partnership.

Ambassador Antonino Maggiore, Head of the EU Delegation in Mozambique, also underlined the mission’s success:

“EUMAM MOZ has become a cornerstone of the EU-Mozambique partnership, strengthening not only security but also mutual trust.”

Looking Ahead

EUMAM MOZ’s first year has been a story of shared progress, from hospitals to training fields, and from international cooperation to local resilience. The mission has shown that security is not only about defence but also about health, knowledge, and lasting partnerships.

As EUMAM MOZ steps into its second year, the guiding principle remains clear: more than a mission, it is people working alongside people, united by a common goal — to support Mozambique in building a safer, stronger, and more peaceful future.
