Europe Day 2021

Europe Day, held on 9 May every year, celebrates peace, solidarity and unity in Europe.

Every year on 9 May we celebrate Europe Day. It marks the anniversary of the historical 'Schuman Declaration'. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable. It’s the second year that we have celebrated Europe Day in the times of coronavirus. The situation still remained precarious, but this has not stopped us to come up with a range of innovative online activities!

Throughout the week of Europe Day, we have launched a social media campaign with 9 short clips featuring interviews of several heads of Geneva-based international organisations, their views on Europe and the role of the EU in multilateral affairs. On 9th May, we have released a 10-minute video featuring them all together in English and with french subtitles.

Ahead of Europe Day, Ambassador Thomas Wagner had a virtual discussion with students from European School of Political and Social Science.

Both of our Ambassadors João Aguiar Machado, Head of EU Mission to the WTO and Thomas Wagner, Head of EU Delegation to the UN, reiterated the importance of the EU's role in multilateral affairs in an OpEd published in Le Temps on Friday, 07.05.2021.

As every year, the city of Geneva celebrated with us Europe Day! Around the city, you were able to spot EU flags on the TPC buses and trams fly on the day of 9 May. The Mont Blanc bridge in Geneva was during week covered in EU flags as well.

In the evening of 9 May,  the landmark of Geneva the Jet d'Eau turned blue to mark the end of Europe Day 2021 and the celebrations.
