The EU Ambassador to South Sudan, Amb. Christian Bader, launched the EU funded Project Feeder Roads to Strengthen the Livelihoods and Resilience of Rural Communities: improving Food Security of the vulnerable populations in Northern and Western Bahr el Ghazal States, implemented by the Nobel Peace prize WFP .

The project is part of a larger EU development program aiming at the stabilization and the livelihood resilience of rural vulnerable communities in the region of Greater Bahr El Ghazal. The programme contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal n. 2 - Zero Hunger, besides addressing the root causes of migration and internal forced displacements. “Building roads and ending the isolation of rural communities is also important for peacebuilding” said the EU Ambassador at the launch ceremony on November 17^th in Juba.

This development project, for which the EU has mobilised in 2020 around 16 Million Euros under the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa, complements and capitalizes on the achievements of previous and ongoing EU funded interventions in the above mentioned States, where about 270 Km of feeder roads, three bridges, 4 market places, 4 agro-processing centers, have been already constructed and in use.

The EU is fully convinced that rural infrastructure is a driver of development: investments in this sector and in particular in road projects boost the economy while contributing to enhance the livelihoods and the living conditions of the rural communities, and improve rural connectivity to basic services such as health and education.
