Four US Researchers Awarded Prestigious ERC Grants
The European Research Council (ERC) has announced the results of its latest Advanced Grants Call. They include 4 US researchers who will be able to use the grants to explore their most daring and innovative ideas. They will carry out their projects in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities and Physical Sciences and Engineering, at universities and research centres in Denmark, Germany, France, and the Netherlands.
Social Sciences and Humanities:
- James Vaupel, University of Southern Denmark

Trailblazing Demographic
- Gregg Mitman, Ludwig Maximillian University of Munich
Project: 'VIRHIST'- Bloodborne: Hot Zones, Disease Ecologies, and the Changing
Landscape of Environment and Health in West Africa
Physical Sciences and Engineering:
- Joseph Hennawi, Leiden University in the Netherlands
Project: 'QuasarChronicles' - Quasars in a Neutral Universe: Chronicling the History of
Reionization, Enrichment, and Black Hole Growth
- Davis Kosower, French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA)
Project: 'Ampl2Einstein' - Scattering Amplitudes for Gravitational Wave Theory
ERC competitions are open to researchers of any nationality. The funding of €2.5 million per grant (can exceptionally go up to €3.5 million) is part of the EU research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020.
