We offer:

Traineeships of up to 6 months within the following sections of the EU Delegation to the UN in Geneva:

  • Traineeship in the Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Section (start in July or October 2023):

This section covers disarmament and non-proliferation issues, representing the EU position at the Conference of Disarmament, BTWC and other meetings.

Main tasks:

  • Assist the Head of Section and colleagues in their daily work in relation to UN and other multilateral meetings in the area of disarmament;
  • Assist in the preparation of meetings;
  • Drafting reports on meetings and conferences;
  • Assist in the preparation of official visits;
  • General logistics support.

Qualifications or special requirements:

  • Excellent drafting skills in English, knowledge of French would be a strong advantage. 
  • Knowledge of the workings of the European Union and of the United Nations would be an advantage, as well as interest in international security issues.

 

  • Traineeship in Economic Affairs, Development, Environment and Digital  Section (start in September or October 2023):

The Economic Affairs section liaises with a variety of UN bodies and other international organisations, including UNECE, ITU, UNCTAD, WIPO, UNEP, WMO, WEF,  ITC.

Main tasks:

  • Assist the Head of Section and colleagues in their daily work in relation to the UN agencies and bodies under their purview.
  • Assist in the preparation of meetings, e.g. research and the drafting of statements;
  • Draft reports following meetings and conferences and summarizing newly issued reports;
  • Assist in the preparation of official visits;
  • General logistics support.

Qualifications or special requirements:

  • Excellent drafting skills in English, knowledge of French would be a strong advantage. 
  • Knowledge of the workings of the European Union and of the United Nations would be an advantage, as well as interest in international security issues.

 

  • Traineeship in the Health Team (start in September or October 2023):

The health team works on global health issues, in liaison with the World Health Organization and other health-related agencies.

Main tasks:

  • Assist the section-colleagues in covering EU-activities in WHO, Global Fund and GAVI;
  • Attend meetings and events organised at the United Nations, EU Delegation, EU Member States, UN Agencies, NGOs, academia or think-tanks;
  • Prepare background notes, analytical reports, summary of documents of relevant UN and EU meetings, events, seminars etc.;
  • Assist in the relevant (High Level and regular) meetings of WHO and other health-related bodies, overall communication with EUMS, including through WhatsApp, email and Agora;
  • Support the team in drafting reports, organising meetings, researching and analysing specific policy topics, analysing policy;
  • Any other task assigned by the HoS and/or team colleagues.

Qualifications or special requirements:

  • Excellent knowledge of English and French;
  • Good analytical skills;
  • Knowledge of the EU and UN systems;
  • Tact, discretion, and excellent communication skills;
  • Ability to work in a team.

 

  • Traineeship in the Human rights Section (start in September or October 2023):

The Human Rights section is in charge of horizontal and thematic issues at the EU Delegation, mainly all human rights-related matters, including the Human Rights Council and related mechanisms.

Main tasks:

  • Contributing to the drafting of briefings;
  • Preparing draft reports on EU/OHCHR/Human Rights-related meetings, conferences and events;
  • Overall analysis of Human Rights policies in various countries;
  • Participation in the Human Rights Council and Universal Periodic Review meetings as well as various working groups.

Qualifications or special requirements:

  • Excellent drafting skills in English, knowledge of French would be a strong advantage. 
  • Knowledge of the workings of the European Union and of the United Nations would be an advantage, as well as interest in international security issues.
  • Diploma/studies in the field of/related to Human Rights would be an additional asset.

 

  • Traineeship in the Humanitarian and Migration Section (start in September or October 2023):

The Humanitarian and Migration section covers a broad range of humanitarian issues and liaises with UN agencies and other international organisations including UNHCR, IOM, ICRC and IFRC.

Main tasks:

  • Provide an active input to the EU Delegation's tasks of representation and EU coordination in the area of humanitarian affairs, refugees and/or migration;
  • Contribute to the interaction between national diplomatic and administrative system(s) and the EU in the context of EU coordination with EU Member States and in particular close cooperation within EU Team (EU Delegation + EU Council presidency);
  • Take part to meetings and ensure timely and quality reporting. When needed draft notes/briefings on humanitarian affairs, refugees and/or migration or on issues of a more general nature;
  • Contribute to and take part in the organization of meetings and events at the EU Delegation;
  • Assist in the organisation of missions from EU Headquarters to Geneva.

Qualifications or special requirements:

  • Excellent drafting skills in English, knowledge of French would be a strong advantage; knowledge of the workings of the European Union and of the United Nations would also be advantageous; 
  • Understand how the UN and other international organizations work; contribute actively to the EU's interaction with them;
  • Understand the specific area of humanitarian affairs, refugees and/or migration as part of international multilateral relations in Geneva.

 

  • Traineeship in the Labour and Social Team (start in September or October 2023):

The Labour and Social Team liaises among others with the International Labour Organisation.

Main tasks:

  • Provide Administrative support to the ILO Team;
  • Prepare background notes, analytical reports, summary of documents of relevant UN and EU meetings, events, seminars etc;
  • Support the team in drafting reports, organising meetings, researching and analysing specific policy topics, analysing policy on topical issues relating to the EU/ILO;
  • Liaise and communicate with EU member States as part of the Governing Body preparations, the International Labour Conference and general EU coordination issues.
  • Assist the Head of Section and section-colleagues in covering EU-activities in ILO.
  • Attend meetings and events organised at the United Nations, EU Delegation, EU Member States, UN Agencies, NGOs, academia or think-tanks.
  • Assist in the relevant (High Level and regular) meetings of ILO and overall communication with EUMS;
  • Any other task assigned by the HoS and/or team colleagues.

  • Excellent knowledge of English and French;
  • Good analytical skills;
  • Knowledge of the EU and UN systems;
  • Tact, discretion, excellent communication skills;
  • Ability  to work in a team.

Important information to read before applying

Before applying you are requested to examine the dedicated website as well as the general eligibility criteria for a paid traineeship (Article 8 of the Decision ADMIN(2017)28 – Paid traineeship)

Each selected trainee will receive a monthly grant to cover living expenses. All costs related to travels, visa, insurance, accommodation must be borne by the trainee.

Applications from non-eligible candidates will not be considered. After the evaluation of all applications, shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited for an interview. Unsuccessful candidates will be notified by email. In case the selected candidate is not able to present the required documents, his/her candidacy will be rejected.

The traineeships can only be offered in compliance with the local legislation as well as the legislation of the country of origin.

Citizens from EU Member states:

  • must provide proof that they will be covered against the risk of a pandemic and the costs of repatriation;
  • must undertake to apply for a relevant entrance visa and / or temporary residence permit where applicable,  based on the traineeship agreement, the duration of the traineeship, and in compliance with the local legislation.

The Delegation informs that even if our Headquarters confirm the eligibility of the selected candidate, traineeships could be postponed, suspended or even cancelled considering the context of the COVID-19 in the host country as well as in the country of origin where applicable.
