The signature of the Memorandum of Understanding is a clear sign of the EU’s wish to strengthen bilateral relations with Guatemala. The Memorandum lays the basis for a bilateral political dialogue, providing for regular consultations on issues of mutual interest.

The visit of President Arévalo and Foreign Minister Martíneztakes place only a few weeks after the High Representative travelled to Guatemala to attend the Presidential inauguration.

High Representative Borrell commented: “Today’s signature of the EU-Guatemala Memorandum of Understanding on Bilateral Consultations is an expression of the EU’s firm commitment to strengthening relations with Guatemala. My January visit to Guatemala was also a sign of the strong and unequivocal support of the EU with the Guatemalan people, and our will to continue defending the democracy in the country and supporting the government of President Arévalo.”

Beyond the transition of power, the EU remains committed to closely work with the new government to support inclusive and sustainable development in Guatemala for the benefit of all. This indispensably includes strengthening governance, the rule of law and social and economic inclusion. The Memorandum of Understanding signed today provides a platform for the EU and Guatemala to identify areas of closer collaboration, at bilateral, regional and multilateral level.
