Haiti: Statement by the Spokesperson on the latest developments
The European Union takes note of recent developments in Haiti’s electoral preparations, and reiterates its support for the organisation of elections. Credible, transparent and democratic elections are essential to ensuring institutional legitimacy.
The EU welcomes the extension by the United Nations Security Council of the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) until 31 March 2027. The GSF plays a crucial role in improving the security conditions necessary for the holding of elections. The EU commends the countries contributing personnel to the GSF and expresses its solidarity with El Salvador following the disappearance of Salvadorian military personnel.
The EU recalls the existence of various international sanctions regimes, including the EU’s own sanctions regime targeting persons responsible for threats to the peace, stability or security of Haiti, or for undermining democracy and the rule of law. The EU reaffirms the importance of these frameworks in safeguarding the credibility and the integrity of the electoral process.
The EU remains committed to working with Haiti’s regional and international partners in support of efforts to address the ongoing crisis. In particular, the EU is working closely with the Organisation of American States, to support the Haitian National Police, including in its joint operations with the GSF, through the establishment of five Forward Operating Bases, contributing to wider stabilisation efforts.
