Iraq: Statement by the Spokesperson on the parliamentary elections

The European Union commends the people of Iraq for exercising their democratic right to vote in the parliamentary elections held on 11 November. This election represents an important opportunity for Iraq to strengthen its institutions, ensuring inclusiveness and accountability, and consolidate its political future. 

We welcome the efforts of all those involved in organising and facilitating this vote, including the Iraqi authorities, the Independent High Electoral Commission and civil society. In response to an invitation by the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission, the EU has deployed an Election Expert Mission to analyse the electoral process. Its findings will be presented to the Iraqi authorities.   

Preliminary reports indicate a higher turnout than in previous elections in 2021 and 2018. The EU now encourages the political actors to support the formation of a government that reflects the will of the Iraqi people.

The EU reaffirms its unequivocal support to the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq. Iraq’s stability is even more important amidst a shifting geopolitical context in the Middle East. The EU stands ready to continue accompanying Iraq as a partner in advancing its democratic and reformist agenda and ensuring a peaceful future.
