Kenya: Statement by the High Representative Josep Borrell on the general elections

11.08.2022 EEAS Press Team

The holding of general elections on 9 August in a peaceful atmosphere demonstrates Kenya’s commitment to democracy and inclusive governance. We commend the open and inclusive electoral campaign ahead of election day.

The EU is looking forward to the subsequent announcement of the results by the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC).

Following an invitation from the Government of Kenya, the EU has deployed one of its largest ever Election Observation Mission (EOM) throughout the country, led by MEP Ivan Štefanec. The Mission has published today its preliminary statement on findings which notes that election day was largely calm and peaceful.

The EU welcomes the good coordination and cooperation of its Mission with the other international election observation missions. The EU EOM will remain in Kenya until the end of the electoral period and will then publish a final report with recommendations.

The EU is a long-standing partner and a strong supporter of Kenya’s commitment to democracy. We will continue to deepen the cooperation in areas of common interest, as defined in our Strategic Dialogue launched in 2021, including on democracy and governance, peace and security, trade and sustainable development.

The EU is looking forward to working with the President, the new government and other newly elected bodies as soon as the electoral process is finalised.
