Mexico: European Union holds second High-Level Dialogue on Multilateral Issues

On 1 December, Mexico and the European Union held their second High Level Dialogue on Multilateral Issues. The Dialogue is part of the Strategic Partnership between Mexico and the European Union. Mexicos Vice-Minister for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Martha Delgado Peralta, and the Deputy Secretary-General for Economic and Global Affairs of the European External Action Service, Helena König, co-chaired the meeting.

Mexico and the EU re-confirmed their strong commitment to the international rules-based order and the UN Charter. The parties highlighted the opportunities that this Dialogue provides for strengthening multilateral cooperation between Mexico and the EU, coinciding with Mexico’s membership in main United Nations bodies in the 2021-2022 biennium

Furthermore, the parties confirmed their shared views on common challenges such as the urgency of continuing to work to address climate change and protect biodiversity, strengthen global food systems, the strengthening of democracy and multilateralism, and the need for a more secure world. In this regard, Mexico and the European Union reiterated their condemnation of Russia's aggression against Ukraine that constitutes a violation of the UN Charter and international law and they reaffirmed their firm commitment to international peace and security.

It was agreed to promote concerted actions and initiatives in preparation of the Summit of the Future, including the Global Digital Compact and the New Agenda for Peace.

During the Dialogue, both Mexico and the European Union underlined their interest in strengthening the local capacities, including by supporting WHO capacities, to prepare and respond to pandemics with a view to conclude a multilateral treaty on pandemic prevention and preparedness. This commitment is advancing through a various cooperation actions on regulatory streamlining, pharmaceutical sector strengthening, and the overall EU support to the Latin America and the Caribbean sanitary plan.

Furthermore, both parties reiterated their commitment to work together to promote the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and the Mexican authorities referred to the actions taken to implement their Feminist Foreign Policy.
