Mogherini announces Solidarity Conference on Venezuelan refugee and migrant crisis

24.09.2019

On 23 September, EU High Representative Federica Mogherini chaired the 4th ministerial meeting of the International Contact Group (ICG) on Venezuela in the margins of the United Nations General Assembly. She announced that, together with UNHCR and IOM, the EU will co-host an International Solidarity Conference on Venezuelan refugee and migrant crisis in Brussels on 28-29 October 2019.

In New York the International Contact Group reviewed the latest developments in Venezuela and discussed possible next steps the ICG members can take together.

"The ICG members reaffirmed that the only sustainable solution to the Venezuela crisis is a political, peaceful and democratic one, excluding use of force, and through credible and transparent presidential elections", the ministers said in the declaration.

The European Union stands with the people of Venezuela and is at the forefront of the international mobilisation to solve the country’s humanitarian and migrant crisis, which is according to the UNHCR "one of the most underfunded humanitarian appeals in the world".

"We have mobilised resources to a high level, but we need to mobilise additional financial support", Mogherini said, announcing the EU would, together with UNHCR and IOM, organise a Solidarity conference on 28-29 October in Brussels. She stressed that the Conference aimed at raising awareness about the crisis, reaffirming political support and calling for increased assistance of the international community.

"More than ever Venezuela needs the support of an international community that works together and in complementarity", the ministers concluded, while welcoming the EU’s announcement.
