New Deputy Commander of MN ST-C EUMAM UA

On May 12, 2026, German Major General Olaf Rohde, Commander of the Multinational Special Training Command (MN ST-C) EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA), transferred the authority of the Deputy Commander of the MN ST-C from Dutch Brigadier General Maurice Timmermans to Swedish Major General Laura Swaan Wrede. This marks the first time a woman has assumed the position of Deputy Commander of this EU military mission.

The ceremony took place at the site of the MN ST-C in Strausberg, close to Berlin.

At the conclusion of his mission with EUMAM UA, the Deputy Director and Chief of Staff of the EU Military Planning and Conduct Capability, German Major General Werner Albl, awarded Brigadier General Timmermans the "Extraordinary Meritorious Medal" on behalf of the High Representative Kaja Kallas. The award recognised not only his outstanding performance over the past two years with the MN ST-C, but also his integrity, humanity and steadfast advocacy for multinationalism. To date, only five individuals of EUMAM UA have received this prestigious distinction.

In Addition, Ukraine honoured Brigadier General Timmermans with the Order of Merit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in recognition of his significant contributions to training and support, as well as his exemplary cooperation.

Major General Rohde introduced the Swedish Major General Laura Swann Wrede as the new Deputy Commander of MN ST-C. Her career reflects experience, leadership and pioneering spirit. As one of the first female recruits in the Swedish Armed Forces, she went on to attain senior leadership positions, including Deputy Commander of the Swedish Army and Commander of the Swedish Home Guard. Furthermore, she brings extensive international experience, including deployments on several UN missions. With her broad expertise and distinguished service, Major General Swann Wrede further strengthens the multinational approach of the EUMAM UA.

Since the spring of 2023, Sweden has been contributing instructors to EUMAM UA. By assuming leadership responsibilities, Sweden is now elevating this commitment to a new level. In response to the evolving security landscape, Sweden is further strengthening its contribution to European security. This sends a clear message: Europe stands united.

EUMAM UA aims to strengthening the capacity of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend Ukraine’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, as well as to deter and respond to ongoing and future military aggression by Russia and other potential adversaries. In this effort, EUMAM UA works closely with like-minded international partners to provide training support to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. To date, the 17 Member States participating in MN ST-C have trained more than 26,000 Ukrainian military personnel.
