Over 250 Join Run for Climate in Suva, led by EU and Germany
Supported by Fiji’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the run raised public awareness, facilitated intergenerational dialogue, and mobilised communities ahead of the global climate conference (COP 30) in Brazil starting on 10 November, where the Pacific’s voice is more vital than ever. Harnessing the power of movement, this plastic-free event recalled that climate action starts locally, through small meaningful, everyday actions.
Starting at dawn, runners of all ages participated in the event to express their support for stronger climate commitments and sustainable development across the Pacific. The event featured a 5km run and walk along the Queen Elizabeth Drive, as well as a family-friendly creative programme, offering an opportunity through artistic expressions to visually and emotionally amplify the message that local realities must inform global action at the COP30 and beyond.

“The Pacific is on the frontline of the climate crisis, and the EU stands shoulder to shoulder with the Pacific nations in building climate resilience and sustainable development. Ten years after the adoption of the Paris Agreement, aimed to limit global warming and combat climate change – it is more important than ever for the EU and its Member States to remain committed to staying the course on climate action and environmental policy. As Team Europe, we are the largest global contributors of public climate finance, and we have ensured full commitment to the collective goal of mobilising USD 100 billion per year until 2025 to support partners worldwide,” said Ambassador of the EU to the Pacific, H.E. Barbara Plinkert.

“Climate action is not only about policies and negotiations — it is also about people coming together with shared determination. Today’s ‘Run for Climate’ shows that communities in the Pacific are leading by example, reminding us all that every step counts. Germany is proud to stand alongside Fiji and the European Union in promoting climate awareness, resilience, and global solidarity ahead of COP30,” said Dr Andreas Prothmann, German Ambassador to Fiji and Special Envoy to the Pacific Island States.

“I thank the organisers of the Run of Climate and all the participants, your effort speaks volumes for this collaboration in mobilising communities around this urgent cause. Events like this remind us that climate action begins with people and partnerships. The Fiji-EU partnership continues to be a pillar of strength in our national response to climate change, driving innovation, resilience and shared commitment across the Pacific," said the Permanent Secretary of Fiji's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Dr Sivendra Michael who attended today’s run.

The “Run for Climate” in Suva, organised as part of the EU’s Green Diplomacy Weeks 2025, is part of a broader effort to amplify Pacific voices in global climate negotiations. It highlights the strong partnership between the EU, Germany, and Pacific governments in advancing biodiversity protection, ocean governance, pollution reduction, renewable energy, disaster preparedness, and climate adaptation.
