A Partnership That Delivers: EUMAM MOZ and Mozambique Side by Side

Following President Daniel Chapo’s visit to Brussels, the partnership between Mozambique and the European Union continues to take shape not only in high-level meetings, but also in practical initiatives on the ground that touch lives directly.

In Maputo, that partnership was visible in a powerful act of solidarity as more than 20  personnel from the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique, EUMAM MOZ, joined a blood donation campaign at the Heart Institute, ICOR, over two days. The initiative was organised to support cardiac surgery programmes for underprivileged children, helping to replenish the blood reserves needed for these life-saving operations.

Conducted in partnership with ICOR and the Blood Bank of Maputo Central Hospital, the effort showed the cooperation between Mozambique and its European partners. It also reaffirmed EUMAM MOZ’s continued commitment to  contributing where support is most urgently needed.

That same spirit of partnership is also evident in the Mission’s core work with the Mozambican Defence Armed Forces, FADM. This week, EUMAM MOZ launched the Theoretical Basic Ammunition Course for FADM personnel, delivered by a Mobile Advisory Training Team from the Austrian Armed Forces. Held at the Military Driving School in Maputo, the course is designed to strengthen procedures and knowledge related to the safe and effective handling of weapons and ammunition.

By investing in this specialised training, EUMAM MOZ is helping Mozambique build stronger Combat Service Support capabilities and enhance the technical and operational readiness of its armed forces. The initiative forms part of a broader cooperation framework that brings together the European Union, Austria and Mozambique in support of FADM’s professionalisation, autonomy and long-term self-sufficiency.

Together, these two initiatives tell the story of a partnership that is both strategic and human. On one hand, EUMAM MOZ is helping Mozambique strengthen its defence capabilities in response to the challenges posed by insurgency in Cabo Delgado. On the other, its personnel are directly supporting Mozambican communities through acts of compassion such as blood donation for vulnerable children in need of surgery.

Currently commanded by Commodore César Pires Correia of the Portuguese Navy, EUMAM MOZ includes more than 80 military and civilian personnel from 12 nationalities. As a non-executive European Union Mission, it continues to operate in full respect of International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law.

From Brussels to Maputo, the partnership between EUMAM MOZ and Mozambique is built not only on training and operational support, but also on solidarity, shared responsibility and a common commitment to improving lives. In that sense, even the smallest gesture can become part of a much larger story of cooperation and hope.
