Press Release: CEUMC Participation in exercise IR 2022 DVDAY

18.11.2022

Larissa (Greece) - General Robert Brieger, Chairman of the EU Military Committee (CEUMC), attended a live demonstration of the Exercise Integrated Resolve 2022 (EU IR 22), today.

Addressing the distinguished visitors, Gen Brieger underlined how “this exercise, in the eyes of Members and Partners, represents a very solid demonstration of efficiency and credibility, beyond EU frontiers, standing as an example for what the EU can accomplish, in CSDP Political/Military Crisis Management planning process. In particular for what concerns the streamline of the planning complexity, including the "Fast Track Process," which allows for additional flexibility and pragmatism. Something more and more key for a timely and effective response by the EU in emergency situations.”

For the first time, Member States have agreed to integrate a Live Military Exercise (LIVEX) into the EU IR22, providing an increased sense of realism.

“I am very happy to have the opportunity to witness the demonstration of the means and capabilities expressed by the HELBROC Battlegroup (BG), acting as an Initial Entry Force – added Gen Brieger - in preparing the ground for the deployment of an EU-led Operation. Furthermore, I am pleased to be here as the interlinking of an EU exercise with the Certification process of an EU BG is also really a first! A strong message to all Member States, as an extra incentive to contribute for future rotations in the roster of EU Battlegroups and as an opportunity to commonly build on training and lessons learned.”

After the completion of the demonstration, the CEUMC reiterated his vivid appreciation for the excellent work done in preparing and executing the LIVEX.

“I will never stop emphasising how training is at the very core of our readiness, as the military component of the EU.            Even before the time to intervene arrives, it is our compelling duty to provide the political authority the full confidence to count on our readiness to act. There cannot be a call for “hard power” in the Integrated Approach of the EU, unless we keep up in training our forces, constantly and effectively, in coherence with the most demanding security scenarios, against the most potential crises.”

CPX EU IR22 is a long-planned exercise to enhance EU capacity to refine its decision-making process as well as the planning at the politico strategic, military strategic and operational levels.
