On 24 November the Egyptian independent media organisation Mada Masr was raided by security forces. Some journalists were detained for several hours without being able to communicate or access legal representation. They were later released.

Ongoing restrictions on civil liberties, including restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly and the erosion of media freedom, in Egypt are causes for concern. Independent and diverse media are key for a functioning democracy. Journalists need to be able to carry out their work without fearing harassment, in line with the Egyptian Constitution and Egypt's international obligations.
