Syria: Statement by the Spokesperson on the shelling of tent settlements in Idlib

09.11.2022 EEAS Press Team

On 6 November, the Syrian regime, supported by Russian airstrikes, bombed tent settlements hosting displaced civilians near the city of Idlib. At least nine people, four of them children, were killed in the attack, and more than 75 were wounded. Moreover, 400 families living in the now damaged settlements, face new displacement.

The EU condemns this attack in the strongest terms and offers its deepest condolences to the families of the victims.

All parties to the Syrian conflict have the obligation under International law to protect the safety and security of civilians and civilian infrastructure. The EU urges the regime and its allies to cease indiscriminate military attacks and respect international humanitarian law. These incidents must be investigated without delay and the perpetrators should be held accountable.

Once again, the EU reiterates the need for a nationwide ceasefire in Syria and for a political solution to the conflict in line with UNSCR 2254. The EU will continue to support the efforts of UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen in this regard.
